Is it easy to make a directory? Where do I start learning it?
I just think directory will work for my audience.

I think the question would be: Is it easy maintain a directory?

Its not hard to create or make a directory. You can find many free script for a directory.
What kind of directory have you in your mind? Who are the targeted audience? How you will think about the advertisement? These are basic things but not hard.

However once you are in business, you have to spend more time to maintaining it than advertising it. So its a tough job to maintain the directory

these are more for webmasters or people searching for something very specific.

I think if you are using ready made script and if you know how to install it it would be very simple. But if you want customized script then you should know how to write script. It would be tough

As said by skrachs, it is definitely not as difficult to create a directory than to maintain it. You can almost everything readymade to make a directory but you should have someone or yourself to maintain it, else you will end up with 1000s of links pending to be approved and useless.

If you are going to deal in directories you should make a lot. Then you won't mind wasting an hour a day looking through your directories to approve, and decline links.
