I have both of them.. I prefer PHPBB, but if you want something easy to understand, go for SMF... and if you want tinyportal easily attach to your forum, use SMF
 if you want more plugins, use PHPBB

I prefer phpbb more than smf. smf has too simple appearance. so I don't like.
But I like most in free scripts is mybboard. |

I personally use phpBB3 and it works great for a free script but i've never used SMF so i wouldn't know which is better.

One thing phpBB miss is the quick reply box. I don't know whether it has a seperate mod for this but I haven't seen it in most of those phpBB forums.

I use smf during a certain time and find it very pleasant. A model which I recently has worked very well, a search engine friendly url mod. The model is incredibly easy to install and works better than any other mod Josef url that I have seen until now.
