Well yeah you need more ram if you use both Apache and MySql since both run as servers. But having a local host is very helpful when you develop web sites.

I have installed AppServ on my home computer where I programm. AppServ is basically, Apache, PHP and MySQL installed in one package. All-in-One. Useful very much for me.

I'd prefer you to install with WAMP. It installs Apache, and you dont have to do anything yourself. By the way, i have tried that once. It worked for me.

I always use Apache on my PC to test my writings, and the codes to check before downloading them. I use Debian and with its repository, it is easy to install.
