cron jobs

do you run cron jobs if so then what purpose i have been reading this forum and have seen somewhere about this post but i dont want to bump it
I am trying to make some cron jobs for pligg

I've got 2 cron jobs setup, one to backup the mysql database to another server daily & one that runs tripwire every 12 hours.

i have one cron job to update the database.

You can use cron jobs but it will take huge system resources , so if you are on a shared hosting and you have too many cron jobs which consume too much system resources then your hosting will probably suspend your account
