Anti-Phishing law worries domainers...
Three senators, Olympia Snowe from Maine, Ted "Build Me a Bridge to Nowhere" Stevens from Alaska and Bill Nelson from Florida have introduced a bill designed to stop phishing. While not a bad thing, it duplicates and often steps on laws that are already in place. Especially troubling is the section on domain names. It seems that the law paves the way for huge settlements for companies who think their brand name (not trademark, brand name) may be stepped on. It has none of the protections of WIPO and actually flies in the face of the trademark act. Not to mention the havoc this could play for domain owners who are legally using a domain that may be similar to someone elses. This just goes to show you what happens when Congress decides to write bills for which they know little about. Ted Stevens is quoted as calling the Internet "a series of tubes."
The bill is currently in committee and ho hearings have been scheduled as of yet that I'm aware of. But the domainers are taking up the cause in hopes that it can be changed to satisfy Congress and the people.
