I'm thinking about hosting my pages on my own server. It's been a while since I ran my own server, but I used to run one a few years ago. I was just wondering what kind of specs you think I'll need for 100 uniques a day using pretty minimal bandwidth (text and pictures). What about 1000 uniques/day?

No. He wont need much for it
192 meg ram will be good with 10 gig HDD and 1 mhz processor 25 gb BW will be more than enough |

For just text and pictures, you can indeed use a VPS, which costs less than a dedicated server. Small VPS plans go for around $10, and move up to $50-60 for more firepower and bandwidth.

If you did decide to go with a dedi over the vps, you shouldnt need more than a PIII, 256/512 ram, and 10-40GB hdd

This should be enough for you:
Intel P4 2 GHz(if possible P3) 256 MB RAM 5/10 mbit port 200 GB transfer I think it can handle your site for next 6-12 months depending on your site's growth. |

But I reconmend this: p4 intell 1.6GHZ 30Mbit port. Unmetered Bandwdith. 512MB of ram I think it would handle atlest 1 year 2 years (if you stay withit). |

1000 uniques per day is nothing in terms of hits on a dedicated server (of any strength)
As far as unmetered, and 20Mbit ports go, you dont need it. You should be find with the cheapest dedicated server you can find (I still suggest a VPS), and a 10Mbps port with 1/2Mbit - 1Mbit connection |
