Is it necessary to hire a professional to maintain the servers for a small business? Or can you just set everything up and maintain it yourself (given you knew how to solve the problems)? I've always heard that maintaining a server is expensive.. so I'm wondering what kind of problems will arise.

I would really recomend having a professional maintain your server in a commercial enviroment. Not doing so could open up security vulnerbilities in your server allowing people access to confidential infomation.
As well as servers tend to need regular maintence to keep them optimized. |

It depends on your site. If its a older big web site with huge traffic and Also gives you enough revenue to spend a amount for a dedicated server then should go for it. Also if you get a "Managed" dedicated server hosting provider would take care of all tech stuff.

Naturally it depends on the site. If it possible, can you show us?
If you have a lot of customers I advice you to take some staff. |
