As you mentioned, the forum posting help the site getting more traffic. This will effect in the SEO as the site with more traffic will get good rank. And so people hire forum posters for their sites...

If its your own forum then posting helps because you increase the content that the search engines see to bring traffic to your site. if its posting within a forum to promote your own site separately then i'd say that helps too, but you shoudl spread your posts across multiple forums in case someone takes offence at what you are doing. Also by using multiple forums you increase the exposure to a range of users and can learn more from different people.

Yes or may be not, I have been a member on several forums and have been posting there everytime with my website link in the signatures, it always help me in getting traffic, but as far as seo is concerned i never found it useful except link building but doesn't return anything.
