Among the problems that could occur are security vulnerabilities. Depending on what sort of sites you run, this could be a significant worry.
If you find a great deal on an unmanaged server, you can still pay a third-party management service to manage it for you, or at least to do security hardening in the beginning.

You can find cheap servers for example 80 dollars month, but managment services cost is round 40+ dollars per month.
I think the logical first step is try to manage a linux VPS and then move to a server

Or go with a managed VPS.

When i first started managing my own server i suffered with a lot of problems, the 2 main problems was keeping the server load to a safe level and being hacked, if you are not experienced i recommend a managed server

There is alot that comes with working with a unmanaged server, as others have said you have security which is a huge must..then of course theres software upgrade script installs etc. If you want to get familiar with running a unmanaged box i recommend setting up a virtual machine on your pc and practicing from there.

Or you could buy a super-cheap (<$10) vps to practice on.

i think that maintenence proves too costly rather than hiring them. also the security mayhem proves to be disastrous. once my pal had this kind of problem and lost heavily. so it is better to go for a third party management to solve this issue.
