Is PR really important?

I was reading somewhere that, PR is really not that important as it is taken by developers. They say, it does matter that how many backlinks you have and it increases the PR. But, for SE ranking PR doesn't matter.

And i think sometimes its true too. I have seen sites come on first page when searching, and they dont have any rank or have like 1 or 2.

what do you think?

If you don't need revenue, there is no need for PR. But if you do want to trade with link, you have no other go... PR is an important one. Even you can sell a link for $25 per month, if you have a PR7 site.

ok..thats along the lines i thought.i have 2 pr 5 directory sites i was going to sell links on for about $15 a month
