No matter how much you try to hide from hackers they can allways get you, they have port scanning software to scan a ip range and if they detect you have a open port. You can consider yourself as a victim.

I rarely need to use proxies as i find that people who seem to use them are doing illegitimate things. I have used one once before but found it to be very slow and sluggish

Actually a proxy can come in very handy, i always use mine (http://www.proxy2go.net) because sometimes my ISP has problems and i cant access certain sites, so i have to run through a proxy so i can get to my sites, OR if your domain hasnt resolved yet in your country, and you dont have a temporary URL the easiest thing to do is to run through a proxy in another country, unless you want to fly thousands of miles to go to an internet café in another country
