Very big sites dedicated servers

I've thought about this question many many times. How does it work when very big websites have dedicated servers? How are they connected together to work as a one machine? As sites like google can't just run on one server, but they need like datacenters.

Grid technologies were used before, now cluster solutions are offered by the dedicated hosting provider, I mean companies like rackspace.com, solidhost.com and fastservers.net.
