I want to run a server on my home computer but my IP is Dynamic. I called my ISP to see if I can get a static IP but they said they don't offer it. Any suggestions?

DYNDNS would help. But you need to re-route all of your ports correctly. The service includes a free tool that will give out your updated ip to dyndns and automatically re-route traffic from your domain to there. I know that they give out free subdomains, but I do not know if the dns service for registered domains is free.

Thanks for the info. Do you know how I would set this up on my router? I have a DI-824VUP but I'm not sure exactly how to set it up and if I would need to forward any ports and such.

Most manufacture websites have a 'full' manual with port forwarding techniques.
for yours goto:http://support.dlink.com/supportfaq/ then select 'di', then '824VUP'. sorry I couldn't make it easier to access, the dlink website doesn't allow hotlinking. |

That is a lot of info. I never thought it was possible to do that on a dynamic ip. Thanks very much for the information and I hope to learn more.

List on this page are free DNS services that provide your site with nameservers, whether your site has a static IP address or whether it has a dynamic IP address.
If you need reliable DNS services and don't want to rely on free services, or you need more sophisticated DNS services for load balancing, you might want to check out a commercial service like EasyDNS. Besides the more advanced DNS services provided, commercial DNS services typically also have numerous redundant name servers located in separate locations, thus potentially making the service more reliable. |

Are you sure that we can host our server in dynamic IP. If I’m not mistaken, we have to register the domain name based on the IP. If so, how they tackle domain name with dynamic IP?
This is something new to learn about. |
