Default Country specific TLDs

I wonder why country specific third level domain (TLD) names are significantly more expensive than any TLD available around. Is it because of law of supply and demand? I don't think so.

They have every right to charge a high amount for their county's tld. I don't mind this because it means that there are fewer spammy sites as a result.

.uk.com is not a ccTLD. It is a subdomain. .com.uk is a proper ccTLD extention. The person who owns uk.com has gotten approval to sell of subdomains using his/her domain. Same as these:

.uk.net
.eu.com
.jpn.com
.us.com
.cn.com
.de.com
.hu.com
.no.com
.qc.com
.ru.com
.sa.com
.se.com
.se.net
.uy.com
.za.com
