Question What is going on?

We have tried to increase the number of backlinks shown for our site on Google for a while now and it doesn't make sense anymore. Personally I am begining to wonder if there is something wrong with our listing.

We have had 14 backlinks for about a year according to Google but our backlinks shown on Yahoo has been on a steady rise amounting to over 1400

The 14 backlinks on Google have never increased, they get overwritten by other links instead but never total to any more then that? Can anyone make any sense of this

I know that yahoo is much better than Google at showing your backlinks but this does seem unusual especially since you say the actual links are changing but the amount of them doesn't.

I guess that something to consider is where the backlinks are coming from. Could they be coming from sites that google deem worthless like link farms etc?

Thats exactly what we're trying to find out MrsWrite. Hate the whole thing really. I think it would be better to rank sites by their age.

Yahoo and MSN catch nearly all your backlinks but Google only list the quality ones and the backlink update is also not instant like Yahoo and MSN.

Yeah, it's much more difficult to get your backlinks listed on Google. Yahoo is tremendously better for that.

According to the Google Webmaster's Guidelines, only a sampling of links are shown. They do this on purpose.

To see more of your Google links I'd suggest signing up for Google Webmaster Central (Select webmaster Tools). Here you'll find ways to submit more of your content via a sitemap file, as well as find out who's linking to your site and even some of the terms your site is being found for in Google searches. It's a very handy set of tools. But you'll notice that it too won't show much more than the 14 you already see.

To answer the question of why your links haven't increased you have to understand how Google qualifies a "good" link. In fact it's already been touched on here.

First, Google has different quality guidelines than either MSN or Yahoo. While it's true that these engines give you a more complete count, it's also true that Google doesn't consider some of these links to be quality relevant links.

Another point that is true is that Google won't show those links as quickly as other sites. I've found that when I do link building for clients, that the links show up within days usually in MSN, followed by Yahoo in a few weeks but it could take months - sometimes a year - before those same links appear in Google.

That's due to various reasons including their authority, how often the pages on the site change and how often the site is crawled by Google.

To put it in other terms, google has a "holding area" of sorts where all new web content goes. You may have heard it called "the sandbox" or other terms. But essentially it's a place where new web content goes until it "earns" it's way out. This could be a matter of days (IE my personal blog posts show up within a few days) or weeks or months (IE when I do link building for my blog, it takes usually a few months fot those links to show up).

Some sites take longer to earn their way out, some shorter. The same goes for links. Because they appear on a trusted site, they can contribute to your link popularity sooner while less trusted sites take longer to contribute.

Hope that was helpful?
