Hi all,

On what basis the domains are appraised? What are the factors decides the value for a domain?

I haven't involved on buying/selling domain names. Am thinking to IN now.

Please brief.

Thanks in advance.

Ultimately, the seller determines the asking price of a listed domain. However, a number of factors serve as guidelines as to a domain's supposed value. These factors include: Length: Generally, keeping a domain name fairly short will make it easier for site visitors to remember and type the name. A short, catchy name is also more likely to yield the desired asking price when listed. Keywords: A domain name that includes catchy, sought-after keywords is likely to generate traffic and buyer interest. Name recognition: A domain that contains a recognized and popular name or phrase will generally appeal to potential buyers. Note that the domain registrant must ensure that a given domain name does not infringe on a third party’s trademark. Top-level domain: Generally, the .com TLD (aka “extension”) is the most sought-after amongst buyers and will thus ensure the highest value of a given domain. Other popular TLDs, such as .net and .org, might limit the versatility of the domain, as they may imply a certain type of site residing on the domain. In some cases, a country code TLD (ccTLD) will be more applicable than a generic TLD. For example, a domain that contains French or Italian language would be better suited with a .fr or .it TLD than a .com or a .net, as ccTLDs tend to be more popular than generic TLDs outside the United States. Current trends: Domains that contain words or phrases that are particularly en vogue may catch potential buyers’ attention. However, such domains may lose their value as current trends change. Search engine ranking: Because some listed domain listings may include the Web site content that resides on the domain, those domains may also retain their present search engine ranking after the domain sale is concluded. A domain that holds a high ranking for attractive keywords with the Internet’s leading search engines (e.g., Ask Jeeves, Google, MSN and Yahoo!) will be particularly attractive to potential buyers. Note that search engine rankings are subject to continual changes and that any change to the content of a Web page may impact its search engine ranking.
