Ways to resist a DDOS or Flood attack - VPS Frebsd

ok Im really interesting in built a good VPS , and my concern is DDOS Atacks and flood.

I know firewalls and ip/tables have to be configurated

What about change ports like ssh port or any other port
how I can do that.

In relative newbie regarding linux
