How long it takes to become good at programing?

How long it takes to become good at programing? Lets say i have about 2-3 hours a day of free time to learn. Could you write the most important programing languages i need ?

its really depend on you , for me try php. try w3school there so many tutorials there...

That depend on the time you use to practice it. 2 - 3 hours is good. It's good if you participate in forum and help answering question. It's another way to learn.

Well learn php then html then java then c++ and write down everything you learn in a notebook it probly wouldn't take long at all if you were decidcated to it. Anyways once you learn php your pretty much know alot of programming.

i prefer learning c++ first and then go for java,
well either way if you learn c++ first it will help you in java and viceversa.

and if you learn php after c++ or java you have an extra edge over others

and one more thing learning PHP before HTML will only make your life difficult. learn html first coz that's the base and then start using php in it.

No one can really tell you how long it will take. It is more than just learning commands. Programming is an art and some people are more talented at it than others, like painting or sculpture. All I can say is if you work hard at it and find that you understand the concepts, you should have no trouble learning it.

To became a programmer you need 5 years. That's what I know. I am almost a programmer now! As for a good programmer, it might take from 5 years to a life time, it depends on the person and the programing language .

The most important thing while learning programming is you should have good discipline. I just spend a few hours after go back from my office just to learn Perl and PHP.

Your post is very vague and gives me the impression you are very inexperienced. First of all to learn PHP, you need to have experience in HTML, as PHP is an HTML embedded scripting language. Second of all, you should go at your own known pace. After learning HTML and PHP, it isn't best to go running and learning Java then C++, Java and especially C++ are very complex object oriented programming languages, and as a result you need to even grasp the concept before going on learning those programming languages.

Basically, in my opinion, you should take it step by step learning a scripting/programming language, and after you've learnt it, you should take time to use it to the fullest extent of what you intended to learn it for. Learning a scripting/programming language is to accomplish tasks, so if you are learning a language for nothing, you'll find it hard learning it.

So in the end what I'm trying to get out is that you should take it slow and not to rush, unlike this user vaguely suggested to do so and learn things you will actually use.
