Tagging...

One thing I've found that is very helpful in marketing a website is giving away free stuff like graphics for forums, profiles, etc. By tagging the image (meaning putting your website's URL actually on the image), you can create a buzz if the picture goes viral. It's not a good idea to take off someone else's tag, and put yours. Nor is it a good idea to tag other people's works without permission. But for original works, tagging goes a long way toward getting visitors. One other thing. I know you want to really show your website, but tagging it in the middle or some too obvious place will turn people off. Subtle is the best medicine here.
