I'm also still new in affiliate programs. But from my experiences, you should bring huge traffics to your site. You could try adwords as Theboss said.
Other ways, you could promote certain products at your blog, by forum marketing, social bookmarking and submit your articles to ezinearticles.

I think you should put the link of pruducts in an obvious place. Therefore, people who surf on your page could see it first.
Then, before becoming a affiliate member, you should go to different download website to know about these softwares. This can help you to know which are more popular.
