Most domains go to auction before they are dropped. Let me rephrase - most good domains go to auction.
Different domain registrars use different companies to auction off their domains. Godaddy, uses tdnam.com for example. So if you are eyeing a domain that will soon expire, do some research to find out the registrar and who they use for their auctions. If the auction produces no bids, the domain will drop. Just as registrars use different places to auction their domains, they also have agreements with drop catching companies. Do some research on this as well...

i back ordered a domain thru godaddy.com a few years ago...
i was told that because at least 1 PERSON put a back order on it, that it AUTOMATICALLY went to auction. this one went to TDNAM. luckily, it was a small town (.com in canada) and no one else bid, so i got it for the opening bid of $10 - which godaddy automatically placed for me when i back ordered it. ![]() i have a small page with some helpful "expired domain" links here > http://www.domainloot.com/expireddomains.html BEST, mike |
