I am considering a domain name which is a .org for my business, but someone said it was against the laws to have a for profit business on that domain. Is this true?

the .org extension is recommended for non-profit organization use, but anyone can use them if they wish.

Was supposed to be used only for non-profit organizations, but that was time ago. Now you can use it for other kind of sites. Search engines don't differentiate between .org and other extensions, and users won't bother also.
