Default Google Earth Is Facing Competition

Quote:

Many of you have looked at Google Earth, now the online mapping service is facing some stiff competition from Microsoft, which unveiled its new 3-D mapping program.

This new innovation has a big central Florida connection.

This is not your father's road map. However, it is a map. One that you can zoom into and fly around to see an area before you *really see it.

Ed Mushill, Geospatial Product Manager said, "The accuracy of the model looking at it, it’s like you're flying over the city."

It is Microsoft's new Virtual Earth, a 3-D way for anyone on the Internet to freely poke around a city online and get the same views they would in those cities.

"You can learn from your own living room from your desktop computer and be able to take a tour of that city and look at a very accurate representation of the Central business districts or other elements of the city that you may be interested in learning about," Mushill said.

Microsoft's Virtual Earth is in direct competition to Google Earth. Google was the first company to come out with 3-D maps of the world.

Microsoft wanted an edge and turned to Harris Corporation in Melbourne. Harris had experience with 3-D maps that used high-resolution pictures to make them lifelike.

“We built a 400 square kilometer model of Baghdad in 2003 prior to the troops going into Baghdad so the first realization of what Baghdad looked like was through our models.” Mushill said.

Harris made three of the cities for Microsoft. They created the Baltimore, Houston, and San Jose maps.

Microsoft only has 15 U.S. Cities in its Virtual Earth program with more to come, but it is a complex process.

High-resolution pictures must be taken all around a city. Then engineers have to make those pictures come to life in 3-D. That way, from any angle, the online city looks the same as the real one.

What do you think after Microsoft jumped too? :P

Microsoft is always hungry. They try competing their search engines with google and yahoo but they are just way too low. Now with google earth? What next?

Ive wasted hours on google earth, not sure i'd be willing to change to some other product now! Unless they actually show my house clearly on the map Then I may consider it!
