There are many ways to learn about hosts and to find out if they are a great host. You can talk to your friends and to other people you know on the Internet. You can look online and do Google searches. You can also check out hosting reviews and get advice from hosting forums.

My tried & tested way of looking for reviews is to search around the popular hosting forums for reviews. Hasn't failed me yet. A review by some random person on a forum who may or may not be qualified may not be as good as something 'professional,' but, atleast it'll hopefully be honest. (Hopefully.)

Yup! Google is your best friend when it comes to searching something that you want to learn. There are so many sites with guides to learn how to setup your hosting.
