Domain names are "vitally important" to small firms who want to use the internet to expand

their businesses.

The Internet Advertising Bureau claims that having the right domain can mean the difference

between failure and success ¨C alongside a number of other measures which can boost an

online business.

Jack Wallington, programmes manager at the IAB, adds that a catchy domain name can help in

terms of search engine optimisation.

He said: "Domain names and URLs are vitally important.

"A domain or URL tells a search engine what a website is fundamentally about and carries a

lot of weighting in deciding how important a site is to a topic."

Generic domain names are particularly recommended as they are more catchy and memorable

that their 'nonsense' or brand name counterparts.

Having a generic domain name can also help customers to return to your business over and

over as they can type the memorised address straight into the address bar.
