Default Question on Dedicated Server

Hi all,

Why do we need Dedicated Server? What is the purpose? What are the advantages of having Dedicated Server?

We can use our own system at home as a web server for our websites with a decent internet connection and uninterrupted power supply. Is this not an best option comparing with dedicated servers?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance.

Reliability, Resources, and Redundancy. The important part of the internet connection is the "upload" speed. Your home connection is NOTHING NEAR what a dedicated server located in a data center. Furthermore, many Internet Service Providers (ISP's) have rules against using your connection to serve web applications, others purposefully block ports for the same reason. Its simply not reliable enough in the first place. For example, say your upload speed is 400Kb/s, that means if 10 people are visiting your website and downloading something, they can only get a speed of 40kbps (SLOW). True dedicated servers have burstable pipes, allowing you to have almost limitless connections downloading at the same time. Your only limitation would be the power of your hardware.

The purpose of a dedicated server vs shared hosting account is to ensure you're getting exactly what you're paying for. With shared hosting, another user on the same server could be using 50% of the processing power, and the rest of the users are stuck sharing the other 50%. If the load reaches over 100% you will see significant slowdowns, freezes, and even repeated crashes or loss of data. The dedicated server allows you to use 100% of your dedicated resources. This is good, and suggested for database intensive applications, large php functions, and other busy processes. With a dedicated server, you oftein are allowed more bandwidth also. If you distribute files, or have large images etc, you'll want to use more bandwidth than on a standard plan.

A datacenter, usually have multiple sources of electricity, including battery backup, diesel generators, and multiple electricity sources on different grids. Could your office battery backup power everything for 2 days?

Another advantage is that everything is taken care of for you. If a hard drive crashes (assuming you're renting the server) the company you're renting from will replace it. They usually also give you the options for backup solutions. If you don't back up your content at home, you have to start all over, plus purchase a new hard drive, power supply etc.

If you're hosting one hobby site that doesnt really need to be up all the time, or available for people to download or view images, then you can set up a computer as a server (but whynot just go with a shared account? $5 or so will cover that, plus you dont have to fiddle with all the settings)

To sum up, not reliable vs very reliable.

i suggested that you should buy dedicated server becos in dedicated server you can make further hosting accounts and can sell them to earn profit.

And if you make your pc as server you need to do many things and main thing is that to run server you have to keep switch on your pc 24 hours.

If you still want to make your pc as server i suggest you to run sever on linux operating system.

You could also just get a reseller account for that tho. He's asking for benefits of a dedicated server in a datacenter vs from home

It's quite problematically to have a dedi at home. It demands many resources.

The worst disadvantage of having a dedicated at home is that if you get caught in any problems, you yourself will have to solve it. You wont be having any professional...

infinitomagazine, are you asking for a recommendation, or just explaining the benefits of a dedicated server?
