How to secure linux remote servers

I just want to get opinion from all members on how to secure our Linux remote servers. The reason why I ask this because I’m suspecting someone is fooling around me by hacking my remote servers. Any idea how to overcome this problem?

Where do you put your remote servers. Are they controlled by you yourself or others. If it is under your control, so all suggestions by SSANZ are valid. However, if they are under those people control which i mean if they are taking care of that server, it is really hard to overcome your problem
