need more traffic

aside from directory listings, making friends, etc...are there other way to increase one's traffic and then of course, ranking? thanks!

make sure you're listed on a maximum of search engines, even small regional ones.
i for example submit my sites to french, biritish, german, israeli.... search engines and directories.
i make small modofications each time for it to fit (hotels in germany for example when i'm going to submit to a german dir) and so on.
if you can't be asked to, there are loads of people out there who will do it for almost nothing

Try to make goodwill among your visitors so they become repeating visitors and can further make your site successful by word of mouth advertising.

buying traffic isn't very useful, that's what i think
cause you don't know how good it actually is

Try and go for natual links in forum discussions and blogs, link your site in a comment or thread to something thats related. Users tend to click those to see what the hell your talking about.

Just dont be sammish about it.

You can also work on offline marketing like advertising in newspapers, print your address on your namecards and distribute flyers.
If you prefer online, then use social bookmarking and signature links. Both will help as well.
