Sitemaps Necessary?

Just wondering are sitemaps necessary? Can't Google figure out how to index a site on its own? What are the perks gained from creating a sitemap with Google?

yes, I tried it and am happy with the results. I regged a domain last week and after 4 days it was indexed by G. I think, creating a sitemap is pretty simple, no need to worry for the generator since google has a list of recommended third party sitemap generators..
