whats really a DDos attack and how to prevent this kind of a thing ? using a captcha on a ll HTML forms which use mysql would prevent it ?

A denial of service attack is basically where they hit your server with requests until it overruns the server's ability to serve pages. The requests can be anything, not just login pages. Usually ISPs have options available to prevent against such attacks.

Captchas are more for keeping people from spamming your server, such as making hundreds of signups with links to their sites, not so much for denial of service.

i don't thing captachas are going to save you from Ddos, and i am all ears to hear how can we provent ddos attacks, any server admin who has have dealt with please respond.

Yes Captachas alone wont able to keep the server safe. if someone can execute some kind of database query, same thing would happen.
