Lighter designs are mainly for the coporate websites and service websites whilst the darker designs are for community designs, professional graphics etc.

Personally, I prefer the lighter designs.

Light designs all the way. White text on a black background really strains the eye.

I like light designs best. Though some dark designs look good too.

I personally prefer light designs... but it depends on site topic.
Light designs are most common and prefered by almost all people.

I prefer using light designs so as to make the visitors clear about what site they are in. When you have a dark design, then there is too high a contrast and the visitor will not be liking to visit that website again!

Yahoo has a great colour selection. Also Microsoft.

I think it depends on the type of website you want to make.
