What I did to tackle this problem was to Enable the Captcha system , then when that failed, enable user-activation through email. ( This helped a lot), and finally moderator activation when things went really crazy. Usually spammers can be caught by their emails. They usually are something like offers, hostingygirls, hothosting..@ loancredits, givemehosting, or something like that .com .

Spammers on forums are so annoying. I'll go to look at a thread thinking it's a good topic, then when I start reading a post I realize it's just spam. It's a waste.

I used to run a fishing forum, used to get loads of spam, it the first post did not have anything about fishing in it, Used to ban the accounts, also began to manually verify new users which took ages!

If you want to stop spam then add a custom question on registeration, e.g. what is 2+2= , bots cant answer those.

I think forum members can offer their services in the right categories - that of course is not spam, that is why there are trader ratings here. External offers need to be deleted on landing.

Well chances are is if the admins arent around for a a good few hours someone will see the spam and click on it, even if its just to see what it's about, boosting PR could also be another reason. I guess you could ask how long is a piece of string too

I hate forum spammers, but sometimes I have to deal with them. I usually ban their accounts, and I started to manually activate accounts. Then I quit doing that, and I haven't seen much spammers anymore...
