  • Newbie in need of advice

hello everyone my name is lauren im really new to the domain name world and imm afraid i dont know too much yet, althought im very excited about it and im reading as much as i can about it.

im just wondering what makes up a great domain name!

is it a .com or a .org or maybe even a .co.uk

is it good to have numbers?

are random letters a waste of time?

thanks for reading and sorry if it seem a silly question

    Hello, Lauren,

Welcoem to our forums. Dont worry, you will learn a lot by researching, by reading others comments, and you will be a domain guru one day!

For me a .com domain name is one the best choices. Others maybe perfer to use a .net, or maybe even a.co.uk. Depends... I am still learning even though I have been in this business for nearly 8 years. A lot to learn!

    Good luck

Hi Lauren, welcome to forums. Don't worry about anything. Just hangout here and other Domain forums and you'll learn a lot automatically.

.com is the best extension. Try to come up with keyword rich names. They get better value.

If you want to register domains to resell I'd say stick with short pronouncable .com and .net names.

Re: Newbie in need of advice

Try at first for what you can afford. I know some people have a limited budget.
I got my first .com when I was 9 years old for a graphics site. I liked it but it was getting expensive and my graphics were free. So it kinda depends what it is for.

Will it be for a bussiness or for a free service?

For a business it is best to invest in a .com. Try to pick short and words that would think of when thinking of the business you are in.

For a free service go with the free ones. Maybe try a .tk (www.dot.tk) or try going to http://www.kickme.to/index.php for a good list of free ones.

On the second site they have terms you can relate to as for computers, and they will give you a more reasonable free url redirection address.

            To your second question.
having numbers can be good. But then agian it depends on what you are selling or what idea your trying to impress on people.
see if you were doing a weight loss site. Say your company can get someone to lost 40 lbs in 6 weeks. You could go with www.lose40.com or something like that.

            To your third question.
Random letters are not good. Be precise and to the point. No one wants to type in www.d5jkh6347.com cause it is hard to remember and you will first lose traffic and second people might forget if they don't put it in their favorites.

No questions are "silly" questions. All questions are good just as long as you have searched and it is not explained in the topic right below it. All questions are helpful, and if you have a question more then likly someone else has that same question but thinks its a stupid question and doen't think people will think its important. But we are here to help and we will try to help you as best as we can.

Hope this helps. If not you can reply here or send me a e-mail at vdhgroup@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Lauren, .COM's are the best when it comes to the web, most people know the internet by .COM but others can be good. .NET is mostly used when .COM is taken.
Go with whatever sounds best, good luck!

stick with .com and .net domains i think, as they are most common and you'd probably get more for them if you want to resell.i do not sugest just picking random domains to register, because some are only worth reg. fee so really you'd just be throwing money away, unless you plan to develop a popular site about a subject and sell it.
