For no particular reason I was thinking today about perfectly good movies that were almost ruined because of one lousy performance.
Lorraine Bracco in Goodfellas. Sorry, Lorraine, but voiceover shouldn't sound like it's being read off cue cards.
Andie McDowell in Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Stiff, unconvincing.
Jay Mohr in Jerry Maguire. One-dimensional acting of a sort that hasn't gone over well since The Perils of Pauline.
Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. Okay, Jackie Brown wasn't a good movie, but it deserves mention because Pam got an Oscar nomination for a performance no better, possibly even worse, than the one-take kind she gave Roger Corman all those years ago.
On the flip side, we have good actors in lousy movies, like Kevin Spacey in Swimming with Sharks. I realize a lot of people think Swimming with Sharks is pretty good. But they are mistaken.
