Difference Between Dedicated Hosting and VPS Hosting

When it comes to web hosting it seems as if every webmaster is striving to eventually purchase a dedicated hosting plan. However, the new cloud VPS hosting environment has changed that perception somewhat, especially for the more experienced site owners that understand the need for instant expandability. VPS and dedicated hosting have some very striking similarities, and to the untrained eye they may appear to be exactly the same. Both hosting types allow for excellent site performance and are used by business professionals on a daily basis, and both hosting types are a step above shared hosting. However, there are some significant differences between the two. The following information outlines some of the basic differences between dedicated hosting and VPS hosting.

      Fundamental Differences

Dedicated hosting is used to describe a server environment in which you are given access to a web server that is not being utilized by any other webmaster. In other words, you have access to the entire web server ad its software configuration at all times, and you are basically leasing your own private web server. VPS (Virtual Private Hosting), while similar, does not give you access to an entire web server, but instead allocates a specific amount of server resources from a web server to your hosting account. VPS hosting is therefore an intermittent step between shared and dedicated hosting, sharing similarities with both hosting types yet leaning more towards a powerful version of shared hosting.

      Cost and Setup

In terms of cost, VPS hosting can be purchased for a much lower price than dedicated hosting, with prices starting at only about $10 per month, depending on the plan and hosting provider. However, it should be noted that VPS hosting is one of the most versatile hosting types, with costs ranging into the hundreds for the more comprehensive plans. Dedicated hosting on the other hand is generally more expensive and the pricing is less flexible, with most hosting providers only offering a few dedicated hosting plans in both the Linux and Windows platforms. Fortunately, and ironically, the setup cost of dedicated and VPS hosting is usually less than shared hosting because plans can be paid for on a monthly basis, whereas shared hosting (while cheaper overall) must be paid annually in many cases. If you’re on a budget and you need a plan that is more powerful than shared hosting then you may want to consider a VPS hosting plan.

      Capabilities and Features

In general, unless you’re in need of an extensive hosting solution, you’ll probably find little difference between the performance of a dedicate hosting plan and a VPS hosting plan. However, some VPS hosting plans do have significant restrictions in regards to software configuration and installing your own software on the server. Even so, some VPS plans allow this, which is why it is important to check with the hosting provider if this is an important issue. Regardless of your needs or preferences, it cannot be disputed that dedicated hosting is more powerful than VPS hosting, unless you’re utilizing the cloud hosting environment.

Since VPS has had much better uptime, is much faster, and gives you much more freedom, since you can install any panel you want, it will be a good solution for running of your web sites.

VPS is a Virtual private server which is said to be a small Dedicated server. This is because it has the same features that are provided on a Dedicated server. There are various other hosting plans which have a different kind of setup and functionality as compared to VPS.
              1) Shared plans :- They are just like Shared accounts which are created on a Physical Dedicated server. These are generally used by people who are new in Hosting or do not have much requirements. They do not have a root access, so a user cannot install any 3rd party application on it.
              2) Reseller plans :- Reseller plans are just like Shared plans but they have a additional feature that they can be reselled further. They also do not have a root access, so a user cannot install any 3rd party application on it.
              3) Cloud servers :- Cloud server hosting environment makes use of a number of different servers in a cluster to ensure that there will always be at least one server available to cope up with the load on the cluster or to replace a crashed server. The hosting is spread across the entire Cloud and each server is generally assigned to perform a single task meaning that a single cloud hosting account will never be relying on an individual server in the cloud hosting environment. So this architecture offers a 100% uptime to the customers.
              4) Semi-Dedicated servers :- Semi-Dedicated servers are setup using the same technique used for VPS's. The main difference is just that there are less number of Semi-Dedicated server's created on the main node as compared to VPS's. So a Semi-Dedicated user gets more resources to use which ensures a better performance than VPS.
              5) Dedicated servers :- A Dedicated server is a physical standalone server which is allocated to a single user. Only a single user is hosted on that server. The user hosted on that server does not share his server resources with any other user. Moreover he has the freedom to install any 3rd party application like any game or any custom application which he has developed locally on the Dedicated server. The user has a root level access to his server, so he can customize the server as per his needs by changing the ports or by setting permissions on the end users. So complete customization can be achieved on Dedicated server.

The difference is of the resources and the access provided to each of the hosting. Lets compare a VPS with some of the other hosting-
Comparing a VPS with shared: VPS is better compared to shared hosting as you get guranteed resources on the VPS with root access. You get more resources on a VPS compared to a shared hosting and the performance of a VPS is better compared to a shared hosting.
Comparing a VPS with a Cloud: Cloud hosting offers many advantages over normal VPS, due to the number of servers that are being used for a single cluster. A cloud offers 100% uptime which a VPS lacks. Apart from this a VPS does not offer the scalability feature.
Comparing a VPS with Dedicated server: Undoubtedly a dedicated server is the best option if you have huge resource requirements. A VPS too provides you with almost all the features of dedicated servers, at a much less cost. But when it comes to performance, a dedicated server is much better in comparision.

VPS are much secured servers and are used in private companies having branches in different locations, but the in the other servers the web can be accessed from anywhere.

There are only small differences. VPS hosting while it can be served via a cluster is commonly found on a single "beefed up" server. While cloud computing is generally found run on a cluster of servers that allow for redundancy and fail over. Additionally, you will commonly find that cloud computing is using ISCSI or other form of Network Storage for its storage space, while most of the VPS hosts I see are using local storage.

Virtual Private Server provides the benefits of both shared and dedicated hosting. They provide a root-level access to individual customers without requiring them to host their sites on a dedicated physical server. This hosting service is used primarily for companies and individuals who need a customized solution.
