  • Domain name question

    Hi
Am hoping someone on here can give us some advice regarding domain names. We are a recently formed not for profit charity and registered our charity name with the charity commission in Scotland.
We then bought a domain name of the same name with co.uk. Another organisation then bought the rest of the domain names i.e. .net .com .info etc. They have redirected these domain names to their website. They are a similar organisation but not a registered charity.
We ended up having to purchase a new domain name to avoid confusion and got permission from the Charities Commission to operate under this name. However, we dont think it is fair that this other organisation can do this.
    Can someone advise please/

Although what they did might not be ethical, anyone can purchase any domain name that's legally available for commercial purchase and do whatever they want with it, as long as they aren't breaking the law or ICANN rules in doing so.

You could get a lawyer involved and try to sue them for the domain names, although it would probably be difficult to prove that you sufferred any damages if you didn't have a well established website with the .co.uk.

It sucks that this happened to you, but if you've already got a new domain I'd say it would probably best to put this behind you and move on with building a website with the new name.
