• Consequences of moving to a different host

Hi,

I'm currently hosting with Godaddy.com, but my site has started experiencing a lot of downtime in the last few weeks, and I'm thinking of shifting to another host. How's Globa t? Lunarpages? Or Bluehost? Dreamhost? Insights would be helpful.

I also want to know whether I'll have to reinstall Joomla and SMF that I have on my website currently? What does making the shift entail? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Did you report this problem to your current host ? If not then I'd suggest you to ask them to sort it out for you, or ask them to move your account to a reliable server. If you still don't find a difference in the services they offer, you may switch to a different host alltogether.

I think Godaddady is using their own control panel. So there won't be any question of finding a host with the same control panel.
But the migration won't be a big deal as your new host will be more than happy to assist you. But ask them regarding this before you signup with them to avoid any confusion.

There will always be something that might have gone wrong on the migration process. I suggest to have some sort of a parallel scheme before doing this.

There shouldn't be any consequences of moving host if you are moving from a bad provider. The worst that can happen is being unable to transfer your site.

Fundamentally, changing web hosts should involve setting up the site at its new location completely, then making DNS changes to point the domain name to the new hosting location and ensuring search engines are properly crawling the web site at its new location.

The only prob is migration. But it is just a short term issue which is nothing as compared to using a bad host.

If you are already facing downtime with your current host, there wont be any consequences in moving to another provider. It is a simple process, many hosting providers offer free data migration and assistance for the transfer process.

The slowest part is the time between setting up the site on the new hosting and being able to turn off the old hosting. You need enough overlap between the two so that at least most DNS have updated to point the domain at the new hosting before you turn the old hosting off. The one thing to never try to do is to switch hosting provider and domain registrar too close together. If you want to move both then allow at least two months between moving the one and moving the other to ensure that the two moves are kept completely separate.
