  • How is PageRank calculated?

To calculate the PageRank for a page, all of its inbound links are taken into account. These are links from within the site and links from outside the site.

    PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

That's the equation that calculates a page's PageRank. It's the original one that was published when PageRank was being developed, and it is probable that Google uses a variation of it but they aren't telling us what it is. It doesn't matter though, as this equation is good enough.

In the equation 't1 - tn' are pages linking to page A, 'C' is the number of outbound links that a page has and 'd' is a damping factor, usually set to 0.85.

We can think of it in a simpler way:-

a page's PageRank = 0.15 + 0.85 * (a "share" of the PageRank of every page that links to it)

"share" = the linking page's PageRank divided by the number of outbound links on the page.

A page "votes" an amount of PageRank onto each page that it links to. The amount of PageRank that it has to vote with is a little less than its own PageRank value (its own value * 0.85). This value is shared equally between all the pages that it links to.

What Google Thinks About PageRank (copied from them)
Let’s get started by going straight to the horse’s mouth. This is what Google itself says about PageRank:
“Don’t bother thinking about it [PageRank]. We only update the PageRank displayed in Google Toolbar a few times a year; this is our respectful hint for you to worry less about PageRank, which is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed and ranked.

PageRank is an easy metric to focus on, but just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s useful for you as a site owner. If you’re looking for metrics, we’d encourage you to check out Analytics, think about conversion rates, ROI (return on investment), relevancy, or other metrics that actually correlate to meaningful gains for your website or business.” (Source: Google Webmaster Central FAQ)

Google’s Director of Research, Peter Norvig, said that PageRank is overhyped and probably needs a new name. Norvig went onto say that the public’s focus on PageRank is misguided and it may be time for a new name.

hmmmm... This seems dubious. Google can't possibly share their alogorithm. Even if it gets leaked out, I'm sure they'd only change it. Even if google shared this algorithm, I would still be doubtful, they can't just show their algorithms. That's impossible.

Yes that is the Google PR calculating formula which appears throughout the net but the reality is that only the Google team know how to change PR scores of the websites. Of course there have been mentioned some useful guidelines by webmasters concerning improving PageRank values of domains which still seem to be very useful and accurate.

For example, the notion that gathering links from pages which have some PR numbers instead of building links on zero PR spots will help. Another point is that when you get one link from a page, if there are only a few outgoing links and URLs on that spot, the impacts on your PR would be better as PR juice will be gained in a finer way.

i came across a pr value graph some time ago and it explained very well you should have a look for it. It showed how many links for different pr's and values needed.
