So if you're redesigning your website and you retain the URL structure, the navigational interlinking of the pages, don't change the title tags, and retain the basic keyword heavy text, really from Google's perspective you haven't change the website. So you're absolutely right as you're redesigning your website try to retain those aspects of the current site design that are talking to Google in an effective way. The URL structure, the title tags and the relationships your keywords, the heavy keyword content, and the cross linkages amongst pages.
If you follows that, you can redesign the website in any way and you'll be fine
