Puthandu is the beginning of Chittirai, the first day of the New Year. It is a very auspicious occasion for Tamils. Tamilians believe that Lord Indra visited earth on the day of Puthandu to specially bless Tamilnadu and the Tamilians with peace, prosperity and harmony. In Tamil Nadu and few other Southern states of India, Puthandu is a day of feasting and merrymaking. Puthandu is observed as the day to initiate new beginnings, new hopes, luck and fortune for the coming year.
