I'd go with banners as well, but that's not to say text links won't be helpful as well. A text link on a big site will get good exposure plus help with your PR.

That's only if the link is a direct link and doesn't have sort of nofollow/redirection. Many sites will sell text advertising, but use their own ad management system so the "text links" don't end being real links at all.

              Re: banner vs text

I would have to say banners aswell. As long as it stands out. I think textlinks are pretty effective too though if you have an appealing description text.

I have noticed though that I have started ignoring banners, not deliberately though

I would say that both can be effective. I've seen with adsense that more people tend to click on the banner and image-type ads, moreso than the text ads, though using one type of advertising and completely ignoring the other isn't a wise decision. I think that using both would be smarter than using one or the other.

Compared to a text link, banners are better in converting to traffic as they are more colorful and attractive.

Banners are more noticeable. Text links are appealing if they are catchy. I use them both. They are both helpful in my ad campaign.

Banners are much more attractive to the users
If you are able to design a good banner or hire one to do it for you, then definitly go with the banner option
