Short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), anInternet service that translates domain names into IP addresses. Because domain names are alphabetic, they're easier to remember. The Internet however, is really based on IP addresses. Every time you use a domain name, therefore, a DNS service must translate the name into the corresponding IP address. For example, the domain name www.example.com might translate to198.105.232.4.

Domain Name Servers (DNS) are the Internet's equivalent of a phone book. They maintain a directory of domain names and translate them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. This is necessary because, although domain names are easy for people to remember, computers or machines, access websites based on IP addresses.Last edited by mikechan12; 08-16-2016, 07:29 AM.

DNS, or Domain Name System, is a fundamental technology that translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses, facilitating the communication between computers and servers on the internet. In essence, DNS serves as the internet's address book, allowing users to access websites and online services by typing in familiar domain names instead of numeric IP addresses. When a user enters a URL into a web browser, the DNS system is queried to match the domain name with the corresponding IP address of the hosting server. This enables seamless navigation and access to websites, email services, and other online resources. DNS plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient and user-friendly functioning of the internet by bridging the gap between easily remembered domain names and the numerical IP addresses that computers and servers use to locate each other.
