  • Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Hair loss after pregnancy is often a very normal physical reaction because the hormones rapidly change after childbirth.

After pregnancy, many women notice thinning of hair or may face hair shedding even more than prior to pregnancy. Pregnancy hair loss usually called postpartum hair loss and it occurs after two or three months of the birth of the baby.

How Common Is Hair Loss after Pregnancy

There is two known cause of hair loss – Hormones and nutritional deficiency. These lead to Acute Telogen Effluvium.

Research shows that nearly 40 to 50% of women who are pregnant suffer from hair loss after childbirth. It is a temporary hair loss phenomena usually happens due to hormonal changes.

Normally, about 85 to 95 per cent of the hair on your head is growing and the other 5 to 15 per cent is in a resting stage.

After the resting period, this hair falls out — often while you are shampooing or brushing it and then it replaced by new growth.

An average woman sheds about 100 hairs a day. During pregnancy, there is an increased level of estrogen hormone which tends to have thick hair and after giving birth the level of estrogen falls and then the hair follicles enter into the resting stage. It means more hair fall. As it is temporary and shedding gradually decrease over the time after pregnancy. Here nutritional status of the mother becomes important as demand is increased suddenly for breastfeeding.

In the normal cycle of hair growth, some hair is lost every day. But during pregnancy the increased levels of estrogen in your body freezes hair in the growing (or "resting") phase of the cycle. ... After you give birth and your estrogen levels decline, however, all that hair that was resting starts to fallout.
