HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is the primary markup language for web pages.

HTML5 is the version of HTML. There are lots of differences that are given in HTML5.

The main difference between HTML and HTML5 is that video and audio are not part of HTML while these both are integral parts of HTML5 specifications

Difference Between Html and Html5. Html5 is more power full and easier than Html4, It have lot of new tags like <header>, <footer>, <nav>, <audio>, <video>, <main> etc. It also support graphics. ... Audio and Videos are integral part of HTML5 e.g. <audio> and <video> tags.

HTML 1.0 - 4.0 (and XHTML) were all specifications for laying out text and images on a page. Later revisions included some attempts at providing semantic data which allows basically for automated categorization and correlation of HTML documents.

HTML5 actually strives to be something very different. It aims to be more of an application development platform, which includes not only laying out text and images, but also playing video and audio, interactive 2d and 3d graphics, storing data in the application, dealing with online and offline access to data, and real-time networking protocols for exchanging data as it happens.

There is no difference. HTML5 and CSS3 refer to specific versions of HTML and CSS respectively. When people talk about HTML5 and not HTML or CSS3 and not CSS, they're referring to a specific version. The specific versions introduce features that the previous ones did not have and drop features that were either implemented badly or considered useless.

XHTML is XML-based specification of HTML which was initially very loosely syntaxed. This loose syntax was easy for amateurs to learn and code HTML but created problems for different browsers because not all browser would interpret the loosely syntaxed code the same way, thus leading to unpredictable results. Hence a far more stricter syntax was introduced to counter this problem - the XHTML. Some rules that XHTML enforces over the plain old HTML is that, all tags must have closing counterparts, not all tags can be nested inside one another, usage of quotes to denote values for attributes mandatory and so on.

On the other hand, HTML5 is just a newer version (specification) of HTML which brings a lot of new features to HTML which weren't available previously, especially native multimedia capabilites, more semantic nature, various APIs also focused on the mobile web (geolocation, etc.), the ability to draw graphics using javascript and canvas and so on. Not all features that have been mentioned in the specification have been implemented seamlessly across all web browsers yet.

Both of these are used to in web development today, although thinking about the future, using HTML5 is suggested. To find out which, just check out the DOCTYPE at the top of the HTML document by viewing the source.
