  • 6 Interesting Web Design Trends Will Impact 2015

In the 1990s websites were flooded with flashing and blinking banners and the mid-2000s saw a proliferation of rounded corners which today look extremely dated. Yet, it isn’t just the aesthetics that are constantly evolving, it’s important to take into account increased connectivity, how visitors will access your site and their browsing habits.

Every year we see that some techniques popping out here and there throughout the year become trite and annoying. Now let’s check out the coolest 5 web design trends 2015 we expect to see blooming soon.

    1. Typography is Here to Stay

The concept of typography has been around since 2006, which also makes it harder to part with the standards that have guided design for so long. Typography in web design has never been as important as 2o15. Some time back, the web type-kits that permit beautiful fonts and typefaces to be used were expensive; however, the scenario today is different. Type kits are becoming affordable (even free in the case of Google Fonts) by the day, which is allowing the designers experiment more and evolve with their typography skills. This is also an added boon for WordPress theme designers as they can bring more typographic tractability to their themes. We hear the designers have already begun to implement responsive typography alongside responsive images and structures in their designs.

    2. Component-based design

In retail there has been a subtle shift away from page design to component design. A component-led approach focuses on the key content assets that are required on a website, assets that have multiple uses such as a product carousel. These components are designed to use a standard schema but capable of being adapted to suit a variety of use cases across the site.

The key advantage of component based design over page design is that design teams can adopt a ‘design once, use many times’ approach that increases efficiency by reducing the number of templates that are required.

This is the approach our UX designer adopted for CrowdShed. A good example is the carousel module. This is used primarily to surface projects (on the homepage for example) but also lends itself to other content types like events, blogs and testimonials. The benefit for the development team is that they can re-use the module schema and structure for multiple purposes without needing new designs (giving us time/cost efficiency).

    3. Scrolling Instead of Clicking

One-page website design has been becoming really popular. Connecting to the importance of responsive design, longer pages allowing users to scroll instead of click proves more effective and enjoyable for mobile users. Websites with scrolling won the audience and proved to be extremely trendy throughout 2014. There’s no reason to think this will change in the nearest future.

Scrolling opens great opportunities to web designers. It allows web designers to present the great amount of valuable content on one page. With a growing number of mobile devices scrolling becomes a much more preferable technique for most users. A common perception of the “above the fold” was one of the main considerations against heavy scrolling. Today, if you’re able to present your content in a logical manner that pushes users to explore it further, then there can be no “above the fold” restrictions.

    4. SVG Images and Icons

Another up-and-coming web design trend for 2015 is the use of SVG (scalable vector graphics) images and icons. SVG is an XML based vector image format that is supported in all browsers (except IE < v9 and Android < v3). In laymans terms, SVG is basically taking a vector image that you created in a program like illustrator or Inkscape and, instead of saving it as a .png or a .jpg, saving the vector image you created as SVG code. When placed where you want it, the browser will then read the code and your image will appear.

    Pros

SVG graphics do NOT lose any quality if they are zoomed or resized
Every element and every attribute in SVG files can be animated
SVG is a W3C recommendation (and has been since 2011 despite underuse)
SVG images can be printed with high quality at any resolution
    5. Ghost Buttons

When you think of “ghosts” you probably think of being hidden. Ghost buttons, however, are perfectly plain for the eye to see, however, they’re partially transparent. You’ll usually see a button outlined with a thin line of color and in the middle of the button, the call-to-action in the same color. The background, however, will show through the negative space, making them “ghost”-like. They may also be called “empty” or “hollow” buttons. (Example: Report-automating website Visage)

    6. Subtle animations on micro-interactions come to play

Details of interaction design and animations are one of the web design trends in 2015 to keep an eye on. Due to the continuing minimalistic trend on the web, designers will focus on the little details to elevate their design. More creative animations will be applied to micro-interactions such as opening a window, clicking a button, or hovering over the navigation. The year 2015 will continue to love flat design and these subtle effects will help user experience stay interesting and engaging.
