You have to do On-Page Optimization (it deals with the proper use of title tags, meta tags, h1/h2 tags, alt attributes, keywords, description, sitemap and robots.txt) first then next is Off-Page Optimization (it deals with building links. It is responsible for creating back links or inbound links).

For successful SEO you need to optimize both for on page and off page. Suggest useful keywords for your site that can help you to achieve good rankings in Google as well as can send target traffic to your site. Try to update content (unique and informative) on regular basis and also try to achieve quality links for your site. This is a long term process. But you will start positive responds once you start the process effectively.
