Dear first confirm which note? 1,2 or 3 . You can not update your Note 1 to kit kat because it is not compatible with this software.

Well update is very easy you can just go to the settings of the android and in the about section you can update all the files with the new version but it will end the warranty and also you might loose all the data and other apps.

Well, from menu you can go to settings -> about phone / about devices -> systems update

You'll see whether if there's new update for your software available. If you have notifications to update your software, then you can start downloading and updating your current software
