  • Difference between 32 bit and 64 bit OS

During my research about 64 and 32 bit operating system I found many people confused about what computer they should purchase or what bit system they should choose…I think this article should be a great help for people to choose the correct machine for their use.

I found many people asking about that what is the difference between 32 and 64 bit operating system?... I hope after reading this article people would feel free to choose the best machine for them.

A 32 bit processor is faster than a 64 bit processor, 64 bit processors are very commonly used that you can find it easily in any home pc but the main difference is the hardware you are having on your machine. For 32 bits there isn’t any need of any wide main bus to carry 32 bits at a time but for 64 bits its must that you should have a wider bus to carry 64bits.

The main difference between a 32 bit and 64 is that 32 bit system has 4gb(gigabytes) of space for addressing means that the 32 bit system has a limit of 4GB RAM to process data where as the 64 bit operating system has 2^64 bits of space to address and supports 16 hexabytes of RAM to process data.

A person who does not care about the category will find 64 bit more beneficial than 32 bit because he can use 64 bit OS with 32 bit Os and softwares. If we compare 64 bit with 32 bit OS, 64 bit is faster and performs more upgraded silicon processes and have more no of transistors which proves it to be more advantageous than 32 bit.

Now most of the software companies are developing their softwares in accordance to the 64 bit environment, it’s really hard for the consumers to run a 64 bit application in 32 bit environment, in this case they have to upgrade their hardware’s such as RAM which is also a big issue because most of the computer users have less than 1Gb in their systems.

So instead of changing your hardware day by day I would recommend d32 bit OS which is more user friendly and enables it users to run applications of 64 bit in 32 bit environment.

Unlike software prespective word length, hardware prespective it off the bus which can transmit word length of 64 bits, which makes double transfer speed of your computer buses, but the system must be all in 64-bit CPU, MB & OS to get the best of the 64-bit machine.

Some heavy applications required 64BIT OS, Like MS SharePoint don't run on win 7 32bit OS but it runs fine on win 7 64bit OS. Mostly home users buy a 32BIT OS, all the programs can run on 32bit OS but some high end programs require 62bit version.

I have the same question before. I find it hard to differentiate 32-bit from 64-bit. One quick question though, which of the two is better if you're going to buy a new computer. I am thinking of buying a new laptop but I don't know what to buy.

Nice post, thanks for sharing. but a bit of info lacking in your post is how to find out what type of system I have - 32 or 64 bits? & where do I check on this?

very nice post..thanx for sharing it. if someone has 64 bit processor then he should install 64 bit os also only then he can make best use of 64 bit hardware...

64-bit operating systems can take advantage of the 64-bit architecture, memory addressing, etc, that is now found in current CPUs.

Advantages are larger memory-address (32-bit can address up to 4gb memory, 64-bit has a theoretical limit of 256tb), some perceived performance gains (depending on the applications being run).

Current disadvantages include poor driver support leading to possible reliability or compatibility issues.

First thing the 32bit (x86) OS doesent support more that 3GB of RAM that is to say it can not index more that that so if you have 4GB or more it is wasted and only 3GB is used.
I will quote the guy (im not sure what his name was) from microsoft who said "The only reason anyone should use a 32bit OS is if they have a 32bit CPU other than that they are just losing performance" So if you have a 64bit CPU you should be using a 64bit OS its that simple.

Actually 32bit systems cant address more than 3GB of RAM (not 4) while 64bit system can adress more then 3GB. A 32bit system will work faster on a 32bit CPU while the 64bit will work faster on 64bit cpu.
