Is there any disadvantage of having a domain with a hyphen? I mean from SEO point of view?

I haven't seen any big player in the internet world have a domain with a hyphen like google, yahoo, amazon, ebay etc strange I guess?

I use hyphen in my domain name www.your-bids.com
And your right you dont find many top sites with hyphens in them.
But there are some out there
    cyber-find.net pr7
    info-listings.com pr6

Dont know if it hurts your seo or not but i surely hope not.
i think that some times when you have a long domain name its easy to read with a hyphen for example
    best-hosting-on-the-web
    million-dolar-hosting
    my-super-blog

if you owned both that would be an advantage
i dont own yourbids.com but ime working on it.

would love to see further replys to this thread regarding this topic

      Re: Domains with hyphen

Most probably there may not be any disadvantage to a domain with a hyphen as far as SEO is concerned. The big players like ebay, google, yahoo, youtube etc didn't need to use a hyphen for the domain they wanted. It is we who find it difficult to get a domain with our own specifications. As many people like to have a short domain and as there are not more left, we go for using a domain with a hyphen. I think not many people like a domain with a hyphen. Even if youtube was you-tube, I think, it would still be as famous as they are now.

        there are not more left

nail on the head there as you are right,There are not many unique domain names left.
Ive searched and searched and yet to find one.
And thats why peeps turn to domain names with a hyphen in them.

Maybe we are searching for the wrong thing like some of the top domain names
        ebay
        yahoo
        aol
        google
        dmoz
etc,all top domain names all making millions,It just takes that 1 domain name that peeps like to become a household name.

          Re: Domains with hyphen

I don't see any disadvantage for SEO of the domain. However, you might have problems because most people do not prefer hyphens so you might lose some of your traffic.

            Re: Domains with hyphen

From SEO perspective it doesnt matter, but from an end user who wants to type the url, it isnt the best choice.

              Re: Domains with hyphen

from SEO point of view there are no disadvantages. It even help since spiders might see it as a space between 2 words. hypen domain names are not for people who looking for brandable names. they are for whom looking for keyword domains.

Dashes in the domain name are good for SEO if you use them to separate keywords. ex: online-web-forum.com

                  All that is good man..
                  But.. Remember one thing..
If you are buying a domain, which doesnt have solid keywords..
REMEMBER -> a dash in the domain name will kill its value..

Read up on Matt Cutts blog. If you do or do not know he is a Google engineer for the Google SE. At his blog, he has 11 blog posts referring to hypenated domains. So give it a look see.

I also have a hyphenated domain, after submitting it to several search engines, it did quite well on its own without any advertising, the name within the domain was great by overture standards as well.

So I would also have to say it also depends what words you use along with the hyphanted word, be careful on how you choose your domain
