  • dash in a domain

I have a domain that has a dash on it. Will I not encounter problems with the search engines?

I don't think so - The hyphen will mean you probably won't get type in traffic and perhaps will make your domain name less easy to remember but it will be listed as high in the search engines if the SEO is right as the non hyphen version.

I have a few domains with dashes and they all appear in Google etc - I just avoid hyphen names if I want to resell although there are some names that I think look better with the hyphen.

agreed... there is no issue with the listing of the Domain name as such... I would recommend not to use a hyphenated Domain for major business site or ones you wanna resell..

Try to just add a word instead of a hyphen it works better for rankings

Exactly.. Hyphenated domain names work fine in search engines..

However, the reason hyphenated domain names and also domain names with numbers in them are no good, and not valuable is because of their inability to achieve maximum awareness as far as branding..

for example.. do the "radio test" with a hyphenated domain name..

            Internet-Advertising.com

"Hey Everyone Go To Internet Dash Advertising Dot Com.. Thats Internet Dash Advertising dot com for your blah blah blah.. See how the word "dash" throws everything off.. thus using more time to say, which costs more money, and also, you would need your audience to have their memory hat on, to remember the dash.. it just isnt effective, too many factors for advertising a hyphen that reduce its value and potential....

Same with Number.. "hey Everyone, goto "For Too Much Dot Com"

            42Much.com could be

four, for, fore, fuor, fro and all misspell variations..
two, to, too, twoo, tow, etc..

numbers are easily misspelled when trying to brand..

I have created a pretty good book to help you understand and make money with domains..

            Good luck.. Responses welcomed..

A dash is fine.. I have looked into this in the past and there doesn't seem to be any penalties from dashes. They might not get as much value, but in terms of SEO, its completely fine.

Absolutely... SEO is not affected with a (-) as much as I know... its is just that the Domain Name does not seem appealing any more and most people will end up on the Domain Name without the dash (-)

no problem for a dash sometimes even i saw a domain name with dash rank better in google than the non dash version but it still better if you have the non dash version too because some of your traffic will leak to the non dash version if your site has a lot of visitors

A dash I believe is much better than continuous words. It does not affect the SERPS I believe and people will remember it much easier.

It's not much affected by SE's if you got a dash or hyphen in a domain name as far as i know but yes when people buy domains the short, catchy, hyphen less and meaningful domain names are more considered
                          Thanks

Hyphenated domains are bad if you want to resell it or sell it to end user. However, they do alright in SEs if you are after organic search engine traffic. There is another con of losing some typo traffic to unhyphenated version

The dash wont have a negative value in serps. on the contrary, it might help search engines distinguish between two seperate words, and you should rank well for the phrase.
